Mount Severn is in mid-Wales, 1mile from the small market town of Llanidloes and some 25 miles from the coast. Ten miles to the west lies the magnificent range of Plynlimon, reaching nearly 2,500 feet. Nearby are the sources of four rivers - the Wye, the Severn, the Clywedog and the Trannon. Mount Severn stands near the junction of the Severn and the Clywedog, and is approximately 10 miles from the source of the Severn.
The house itself is a large Grade II listed Georgian country residence, surrounded by 14 acres of gardens and woodlands through which the river Severn flows on its way to Llanidloes. Its waters are clear and cool - ideal for swimming in the deep, rocky pools or just paddling in the shallows.
The woodlands and gardens, which were established 175 years ago, include some superb oak, beeches, fir trees, and abundant rhododendrons and azaleas. Some of them being important specimens to Wales and some introduced from Kew Gardens.
Whether you just sit in the gardens or wander through the many paths to the wilder parts of the woodland, there is a rich variety of natural life to watch - squirrels and finches, kingfishers and wagtails, owls, buzzards, red kites, the odd heron and otters if you are very fortunate!
Some of our walks take us through the Hafren Forest to the source of the Severn on Plynlimon's slopes. The flowers, trees and mosses are all spectacular. On the edge of the forest, in the Bryntail Gorge, stands the massive dam of the Clywedog reservoir. The lake is 6 miles long and is a paradise for sailing and other water sports. The breathtaking falls of Ffwrd Fawr, dropping hundreds of feet into the Twymyn gorge, are only 10 miles from Mount Severn. The spectacular Cadair Idris is within an hours drive.
Athough hills, rivers and wildlife are all around, civilisation is not too far away. Llanidloes is a lively market town. Its Market Charter was granted in 1280 by King Edward I and its ancient Market Hall, built around 1600, is the only one of its kind in Wales. Llanidloes is the first Fair-trade town in Wales and offers good organic and vegetarian outlets.
There are also excellent specialist shops ranging from bridal to outdoor pursuits. With good communication links to all major airports (Birmingham, Manchester and Cardiff only 2 hours away) and trains (Caersws links with Birmingham and Shrewsbury) we are “away from the crowds – but easily accessible.
